2020 has been a tough year for many, to say the least. As we are nearly halfway through 2021 and it is beginning to look more hopeful for Canadians, we have begun to reflect on what COVID-19 has done to our communities, our country, and the world. With the new regulations, lockdowns, and social isolation there has been a drastic increase in domestic abuse, which disproportionately affects women.
As a women-run and minority-owned small business we have decided we need to take actionable steps to help our community and to raise awareness about an issue that has far reaching effects. There is a false perception that domestic violence is a private issue that happens behind closed doors, however the consequences of abuse are felt in our health care services, shelters and transition homes, child care and social support services, and criminal justice institutions.
One of our core values is to grow consciously, and what that means to the team at Delta Mei is to take care of others, and our planet. With that in mind, the decision to donate 1% of our sales to a non-profit in need was an easy one. Given the events of the past year, we felt it was the right call to donate 1% to an organization called Shelter Movers. We have chosen this non-profit because it focuses on empowering survivors, building a community, and providing an opportunity to help put an end to gender-based violence. Shelter Movers provides free moving and storage services to those who are affected by gender-based violence and need to transition to a safer home. The financial burden of moving can often be a barrier for survivors trying to leave, and Shelter Movers works to ensure that survivors are able to keep their cherished belongings without worrying about cost.
We understand that there is still a long road ahead when it comes to ending gender-based violence, but we are confident that it will be achieved one day. Please check out Shelter Movers to learn more about their non-profit, how they help the community, and how you can join them to help stop gender-based violence. At the end of the day, every little bit helps. Whether it is sharing a story on social media, donating your time or money, or helping out a friend that is struggling with a related problem. We believe that we have a responsibility to be the change we want to see in the world, and the team at Delta Mei is absolutely thrilled to give back to this cause.
